Frequently Asked Questions

Travel & Arrival Info
You'll fly into Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (FNC) in Madeira. While seasonal direct flights exist from select U.S. cities, most travelers connect via Lisbon, Porto, or another European hub. We recommend arriving by 3:00 p.m. on the first day of your stay. If you're coming from North America, consider arriving a day early to ease in. We’re happy to help arrange your stay at Estalagem or in the surrounding area. Airport transfers are included within designated arrival and departure windows.
What’s Included / Not Included
Retreats typically include accommodations, daily breakfast, group dinners, curated excursions, group transport, and thoughtful touches. Not included: flights, some meals, optional spa services or experiences, travel insurance, and personal purchases.⤷ Details vary slightly by retreat and are outlined on each retreat page.
Who It’s For
These retreats are designed exclusively for women - creating space for reflection, connection, and beauty in an atmosphere that feels relaxed, intentional, and welcoming. Many guests come solo, while others travel with a sister, daughter, or close friend. We’re also exploring future retreats that may include couples or mixed groups, as our offerings continue to grow.
Accessibility / Room Types
Retreat venues may include stairs, stone walkways, or uneven ground. Please reach out if you have mobility needs. Rooms are typically based on double occupancy, with limited single rooms available by request. Room details are listed within each retreat description.
Cancellations & Refunds
A $500 USD deposit secures your spot and is non-refundable. Cancellations made more than 3 months before the retreat receive a refund of all payments except the deposit. Cancellations within 3 months are non-refundable but may be transferred to another guest with approval. If The Madeira Experience must postpone or cancel a retreat due to circumstances beyond our control, payments will be applied to a future retreat or refunded, excluding non-recoverable supplier costs. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance.
How to Reserve
Each retreat page includes a secure Tally booking form. A $500 deposit confirms your reservation. Flexible payment plans are available.
Extensions & Custom Travel
Whether you’re extending your stay in Madeira or tacking on a visit to Lisbon or Porto, we’re happy to help. Trip planning support is included as part of your retreat experience.
What to Pack
Bring light layers, walking shoes, swimwear, a daypack, and clothes for both coastal warmth and cooler mountain breezes.⤷ A detailed list will be included in your welcome guide.
Daily Rhythm / What to Expect
Expect a thoughtful mix of slow mornings, guided excursions, shared meals, and time to simply pause. No two days are exactly alike, but each one is designed to flow — with care, presence, and purpose.
What Kind of Activities Are Included?
Each retreat includes gentle movement (levada walks or optional hikes), moments for reflection or journaling, meaningful group connection, and immersive cultural experiences. Everything is curated to be enriching but spacious — with no pressure to do it all.
Dietary Needs & Restrictions
We do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions with advance notice. Please include any needs on your booking form, and we’ll reach out to confirm before the retreat.
Is English Widely Spoken?
Yes - English is spoken at the retreat hotel, during excursions, and in most restaurants and shops. That said, Madeira is proudly Portuguese, and you’ll hear the local language throughout. We’ll share a few phrases for fun and connection.
Will I Have Wi-Fi and Cell Service?
Yes. Estalagem and most retreat locations offer reliable Wi-Fi and cell service. Some nature-based excursions may take you off-grid briefly - and that’s often part of the charm.
Is Madeira Safe?
Madeira is considered one of the safest destinations in Europe, with a welcoming community and a relaxed pace. As always, basic awareness is encouraged, but most guests feel completely at ease.
There’s more waiting here. Join a retreat or create your own experience — the journey begins where curiosity leads.
